about the valley squares

The Valley Squares is one of the longest running square dance clubs in the Portland area. We celebrated our 65th Anniversary in April 2014 and look forward to many more years of dancing. We invite you to join us in our new air-conditioned hall! The Valley Squares are a member of the Tualatin Valley Council (TVC). Learn more about the TVC and other organizations around the state.

I graduated from Valley Squares Square Dance class in May, 1979. I’ve been cueing since 1984. Club cuer for Valley Squares for over 25 years. The only cuer they’ve had except for occasional guest cuers. Previously, the caller used to teach the sequences & cue 1 sequence, then, the dancers had to do the rest by memory! Today, we have too many dances to be able to do that! I’m a past club cuer for 4-N-8ers, Merry C-Saws, Tri-Squares, and Coast Swingers. Guest cuer for many other clubs in the Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Gresham area plus LaPine, Oregon. I’ve cued at most Mid-Winter Festivals since 1984; at many Summer Festivals; the annual State Meeting; Coast Swingers Wade Driver dances; Penticton, British Columbia Festival; several Nationals. In the past, I had a round dance club called Aloha Rounders. It was founded by former Valley Square members to give dancers a chance to practice. It was handed down to me by Norm Yoder. It was discontinued for lack of interest. It could be a viable option in the future. I’ve been teaching round dancing for 21 years. Tom Ormiston has been my partner for most but I’ve had 3 other teaching partners.
